I always tell them there is really no one answer: we get news from everywhere.

Readers call in. Folks stop by. Sources tip us off.

And sometimes, we — as residents in the same communities as you — just stumble upon news.

That’s what happened Sunday afternoon, when reporter Chris Kauffman was taking her 7-month-old chocolate Lab, Baggins, to Canine Meadows dog park in Manchester from their home in Red Lion. (That’s Baggins in the photo at the top, before he became such a newshound.)

At the intersection of Lombard and Cape Horn roads, smoke was hindering visibility. Baggins began to howl. So Chris pulled into the Giant Food lot, which was a feat in itself as the smoke was very thick.

Baggins continued to howl. In Chris’ ear. In her tiny Mini-Cooper.

Chris called managing editor Mark Franklin to tell him there was a fire at the Windsor Common townhome development. And she set off to cover it after moving her car, Baggins still howling inside, to a safe location far away from the fire .

Thanks to Chris, we had a brief on the fire on our website in a few minutes.

Baggins was happy when Chris returned about 20 minutes later and they could continue to the dog park…where Baggins was bitten by a giant poodle. But that’s another story.

For a little less than two hours on our website Thursday, it looked as though the recession was over. Or, at least, the housing market had completely rebounded.

Sadly, neither is true. But here’s what happened.

Business reporter Chris Kauffman writes on local housing market numbers all the time. Every month, the Realtors Association of York & Adams Counties (RAYAC) releases statistics on home sales from the previous month, comparing them to home sales from a year ago. For a while now, those numbers have been rather dismal.

Thursday, however, the RAYAC numbers showed a 100 percent increase in home sales compared to January 2011. And an increase in the median sale price. Great news! Chris quickly wrote up the story and posted it to www.yorkdispatch.com.

Except it wasn’t. RAYAC sent us the wrong numbers. As soon as we were told, Chris pulled the story off the website, but as she was tied up with other things, education reporter Andy Shaw wrote the rewrite — the real numbers showing a jump, but only 9 percent, not 100 percent. You can read that story here.

Anyone who thinks they were going crazy Thursday, reading a great story about local housing numbers, then watching it disappear … you’re not nuts.
