Meet American Idol contestant Brielle Von Hugel

We didn’t get to see Brielle Von Hugel perform when she earned a golden ticket during the Savannah episode.

But she was the subject of a featured segment last year’s New Jersey auditions.

You might remember her as the 16-year-old who always wore a flower in her hair and was singing on behalf of her dad, who is also a singer and had throat cancer at the time.

She impressed the judges then with a rendition of “Endless Love” and says she thinks she’s improved since Season 10.

Brielle, of Staten Island, N.Y., says she first performed in public at age 5 at an Italian restaurant.  They asked her to sing and “I did,” Brielle recalls, saying she performed a song from Titanic.  “I was fearless, not shy at all.  I loved being in front of everyone.”

Last year, she said she thinks her raspy voice helps set her apart.  This year, she gave Idol a different answer to that question.

“I’m only 17,” she said, “but I have the determination of someone who’s been doing this for a long time.”

Here are some non-Idol performances by Brielle.

“Who Do You Think You Are”

“Inside Your Heaven”

  7. [...] Brielle Von Hugel:  Interesting case.  We haven’t seen her sing all that much.  And when we’ve seen her, she’s been just OK.  Like that version of “Killing Me Softly.” Sorry, Mrs. Von Hugel (Brielle’s mom), but that was a misfire.  Not sure I agree with that decision.  First one in a while.  Judges’ rating:  Could have made a better pick. i think brielle is amazing she should have made it further American idol judges messed up they’ll regret it when she makes it big and she was not getting mad at her group members they were just soo off track she was trying to get them back on track and kyle sucked so her mother was nice about it and said that if kyle keeps messing up brielle and the others will get sent home and that not fair to them
