Carrie Underwood extends streak of top 2 country hits

Well, Carrie Underwood made it 15 in a row.

That’s 15 straight singles to hit number one or number two on the country singles chart.

A week ago, I was wondering whether she could accomplish the feat because “Blown Away” was stuck at number three on Billboard’s country singles chart behind a pair of Taylor Swift tunes.

And Billboard just changed its methodology for determining positions on the chart, taking streaming and downloads into account as well as airplay on country radio.

But “Blown Away” nudged past Taylor’s “Red” anyway and moved up to number two on this week’s charts.

Now the only question is whether the second single from the album by the same name will reach number one (Taylor’s “We Are Never Ever Gonna Get Back Together” now holds the spot).

Or whether it will become the fourth of those 15 straight hits to peak at number two. To date, only “Mama’s Song,” “I Told You So” and “Don’t Forget About Me” failed to hit number one for Idol’s Season 4 winner.

“Blown Away” the song also advanced on three other charts this week — Hot 100, radio songs and digital songs — and the album is still number two on the country album chart behind only Little Big Town’s “Tornado.”

In other chart news …

* “Home” continues its phenomenal success for Phillip Phillips, reaching new peaks on the adult pop song chart (5), the radio songs chart (29) and holding at its peak position on the rock songs chart (3) and adult contemporary chart (12). Oh, and it moves up six spots on the Hot 100 to number 19.

* After a slow climb on the Christian singles chart, Jason Castro’s “Only a Mountain” moves into reverse, dropping from number 20 to 23.

* Season 1 X Factor winner Melanie Amaro has a new single, “Don’t Fail Me Now,” that moves up from 25 to 21 on Billboard’s dance/club play chart.

* And Chris Rene, who finished third on The X Factor last fall, released a debut EP three weeks ago. It debuted at 55 on the Billboard 200 last week. This week it plummets to 129.
