Since I began writing for my middle school newspaper nearly 20 years ago, I have passionately defended the freedom of speech. So, given that and my 13 years writing for professional publications, I disagree with you that I don't "get" or "understand" free speech.

Let's not kid ourselves, John. This issue isn't about the First Amendment. Nobody has suggested Dan Cathy be censored or imprisoned by the government for his words and beliefs.

Yet there are still 29 states in America where a person can be fired for being gay.

Organizations like Family Research Council and Marriage & Family Foundation spend money to make sure those statuses don't change. Similarly, those organizations have done work internationally, supporting the 75 countries where it is illegal to be gay. In nine of those countries, being gay is punishable by death.

Chick-fil-A has donated about $5 million to those organizations. Their money obviously comes from customers who buy their products. So a portion of the $3.1 million the chicken chain collected on Wednesday may likely be given to organizations that support the execution of same-sex couples.

So I'm not sad that millionaire Dan Cathy has been criticized for his comments about gay marriage. It's his free speech to tout his opinion, and it's mine to respond to it.

And my opinion isn't on the side of liberals or conservatives. It's on the side of humanity.

My humanity says it's wrong to fire, legally punish or kill someone simply because of who they love.

And that, sir, is what I'm teaching my daughter.

Written just like another liberal who doesn't get understand "free speech".
BTW: Many of my friends are gay and fully support Cathy's right to his opinion. It's not like he's actively attempting to discriminate against gays in his stores.

Oh well, if you want to teach your child that free speech is a bad thing than go ahead. I would teach her that discrimination is a bad thing and leave it at that.

Finally, I do agree that family is about love and not about one mother/one father but can be two mothers/two fathers. I have no problem with that but I have a problem with liberals attempting to take away a person's right to free speech and to have their own opinions. Fight against discrimination, not personal freedoms and free enterprise.
