Make Take-Out at Home
Eating out or ordering take-out is very appealing. Someone else is doing the cooking, and someone else is cleaning up the mess. It is meant to save time and hassles, but in an unfriendly economy, all those take-out containers are not only taking room up in your fridge, they are taking money out of your wallet.
According to the National Restaurant Association, in 2008 the average American family spent nearly $2,700 on food not made at home. That’s no small amount, and even if the recession has been officially declared “over,” most of us are still very much feeling the effects.
But, if you can’t seem to live without your weekly intake of Chinese/Indian/Thai/pizza, then try an new approach: make it yourself. It doesn’t have to be as difficult as it seems. Not only will it save you money, it will also possibly save you some calories. Eating out not only costs money, it costs calories because you don’t really know how your food is being prepared or what is being put in it. Making the at-home version, you have the ability to determine what goes in, or stays out of, your food.
Below is a recipe for Thai Peanut noodles – an easy recipe that tastes very authentic.
Thai Peanut Noodles
2 cups of cooked spaghetti
1 tablespoon sesame oil
3 tablespoons smooth peanut butter
1 tablespoon fresh ginger, chopped
red pepper flakes to taste (approx. 1 teaspoon)
3 tablespoons hot water
1 garlic clove, chopped
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds
1. Cook spaghetti as directed by the manufacturer.
2. Combine all other ingredients, mix until peanut butter is dissolved.
3. Add sauce to drained pasta, toss until pasta is fully coated.
4. Sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds.
