Invasion!
This is an entry in Junior Dispatch’s alien short story contest. The effort earns the writer a free book from the York Emporium and a chance to win a $50 movie gift card and a $50 gift certificate from The York Emporium. The submission deadline was Aug. 1.

BOOM! A missile hit the cracked road and exploded leaving a huge fire of tall, orange flames behind. It was true! Everyone said it would happen today, and it did. It was in New York City that Ben, the father of Dan, Evan, Katie and Bob were driving on a city street with people running and screaming all around them, skyscrapers in ruins, the Empire State building in flames, and Central Park bare of all vegetation. An alien invasion was happening today! Starting in New York City, then North America and within 9 hours the entire world! The aliens were spying on earth for years. They knew earth’s defenses, climate, and vegetation. They wanted more than vegetation to put on their lifeless planet; they wanted the entire planet.
They had a huge UFO stock divided into 2 groups. The first group had attack UFOs that were about the size of a suburb house. The second group’s UFOs were enormous (Central Park size) and used tractor beams to gather vegetation. These vessels were huge but not near the size of the alien mothership. This New York City size vessel could turn an entire state into a smoking crater with one blast of its atomic super cannon.
So anyways, back to Ben. He was driving through New York City with Bob, Dan, Evan, and Katie in the back. All four children were crying. Eventually, Ben replied in sorrow, “I know what happened to your mother is terrible, but we must remain calm.”
Bob replied in tears. “How … do … you remain calm when … you know your … mother … was taken … away forever?”
Dan continued, “Yeah … how daddy?”
Ben had a flashback to later that morning. He was running from the UFO’s with Bob, Katie, Evan, Dan, and his wife, Rose, down the street. Suddenly, a shadow flew over the entire city. It was the alien mothership!
Inside, an alien crewmate awaited the alien commander’s orders. “Hello boss,” said the crewmate as he walked into the alien commander office. On the walls were samples of rock from all the planets the commander had invaded. On the back wall was a map of the galaxy. The planets that the alien commander owned were circled, which was all of them.
“Come on in and have a seat.” the alien commander bellowed deeply.
“What do you want me for?” the alien quivered.
“You’ve been asking lately, why I have decided to invade Earth?”
“Why is that?” The alien replied.
“As you know,” the commander said pointing to the map on the wall, “I have invaded all planets in our origin galaxy.”
“So?” the alien asked.
“None of the planets had vegetation or water,” the alien commander said. “The only thing on all those planets was dust and rock. Not a single life form roamed these planets. That’s why I have decided to take over a planet with vegetation and life.”
“So what’s the plan for this invasion?” the alien asked.
“Well, once I unleash my huge array of weapons on the human race, they will know what true power is. They will turn their backs on all their leaders. They will also give me all their vegetation and water. They will then give up their miserable souls to me and then worship our race like GODS!!!!!!!!”
The alien commander projected a huge evil laugh. You would not believe the ugliness of this being. He had squinted red eyes, hands with three fingers ending in claws, grey wrinkled skin, elongated head, and feet with five toes with claws.
“You are free to go,” the alien commander quickly said. “Warm up the tractor beam to catch the female human. She will make a great life form to put into the holding tank in the corner.” And sure enough there was a cylinder shape holding tank filled with green bubbling containment liquid.
The alien went to the terminal that controlled the tractor beam. He aimed the tractor beam directly towards Rose, Ben’s wife!!! The tractor beam locked onto Rose and started to pull her away from the ground. Ben tried to pull Rose away from the beam, but the force of the tractor beam was too strong.
“Rose!!!” the four children and Ben screamed.
Rose then shouted “Don’t worry! I will be fine.”
The alien commander started an evil laugh as Rose was pulled up by the tractor beam. His evil laugh was heard throughout the entire city. “HahahahaHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!” That terrible loud laugh ended Ben’s flashback.
The children were now frequently asking questions. Ben could not take it. He was as depressed as the children about Rose’s capture, but he knew he had to remain calm.
Finally, he interrupted the children. “Do not worry! I am going to take you to the safest place available. There we can start a secret new life and gradually forget about today’s events.”
He took them to Pennsylvania. But as they were driving through York, they came upon three hitchhikers, two adults and one child. Ben sharply pulled over beside the sidewalk and lowered the window to talk to the family.
The boy said, “Hello! I am Tyler. These are my parents, Ken and Julia. I am looking for people that will help me fight the aliens with my new weapon (Uranium cannon).”
Ben looked surprised. “That is the same weapon that the mothership has.”
Tyler responded, “It will have enough fire power to take down the mothership but I need assistance in setting it up because it is cumbersome.”
Ben quickly responded “I’m in!”
“How about you guys?” Tyler asked.
All four children responded “I’m in too!”
So Tyler got to work. The gang prepared the weapon in the nearby field.
The next morning, Tyler woke the gang up. “We got the mothership right where we want it. We have to launch our attack this morning.”
The gang rushed to the field and helped set up the weapon. They could see the mothership covering the view to the sky. Tyler manned the weapon.
Inside the mothership, the alien commander looked out the window. His expression told the entire crew that he was angry. “Man the atomic super cannon!” the alien commander shouted furiously. “I will not allow the mothership to be destroyed. Aim the cannon at those despicable humans. If they want destruction, they’ll get destruction!”
The cannon crew did what they were told. They aimed the cannon directly at the field.
While back on the ground, Tyler aimed the weapon at the mothership. Katie walked toward Ben before the cannon was fired. “After this,” Katie explained, “I want Rose back! I can not live with her being gone.” Tears swelled up in her eyes.
Ben took a moment of thinking, and then told Katie, “Rose is still on the mothership. She may not survive the explosion. We have no choice or we all die. But don’t worry, we will search the ruins of the mothership until we find her. We have no other choice.”
The alien commander heard it all. Tears began to well up in his eyes but he quickly stopped. “I don’t care about their feelings. Just fire the cannon.”
Tyler took a second, then took aim and fired his cannon. The two projectiles rammed into each other and exploded in the air. The force of the blast flung the gang to the ground. After a few seconds, the explosion stopped. The explosion destroyed the rnothership!!!
Something fell from the sky along with the mothership ruins. Ben rushed to see what it was. Sure enough it was Rose. Ironically, the holding tank with the green liquid protected Rose from the fiery crash.
“Mother!!!” all four children and Ben yelped. They rushed to the scene.
“I told you I would never let you down,” Rose said and everyone hugged.
Then a government truck pulled up. They were coming to search for alien life. The government agents searched through the ruins and found the alien commander. They dragged him towards the truck. The alien commander was conscious, so he was struggling to get free. The alien commander yelled, “You have not seen the last of me. Once I get out of here, I will unleash my weapons again. Soon, I will have the entire universe bowing at my feet.”
Ken approached the gang. “Thank you for assisting us,” he said.
“No problem,” said the group.
Ken rushed to join Julia and Tyler, while the remaining group put their arms around each other and watched the remaining alien ships explode in the sky like fireworks.

It was in New York City that Ben, a 35 year old father of Dan, 4, Evan, 10, Katie, 13, and Bob, 15, were driving on a city street with people running and screaming all around them, skyscrapers in ruins, the Empire State building in flames, and Central Park bare of all vegetation. An alien invasion was happening today!
First in New York City, then the state of New York, then the east coast, then North America! In 9 hours the entire world would be under alien control. The aliens had been spying on earth for 5,000,000,000 years now. They knew earth’s defenses, history, climate, and vegetation. They wanted more than vegetation to put on their lifeless planet; they wanted the entire planet earth itself.
They had a huge UFO stock divided into 3 groups. The first group had UFOs that were about the size of a typical suburb house. These were the typical attack UFOs. They had 4 missiles, 8 canons, 10 bombs, and 1 tractor beam onboard and were piloted by 1 alien pilot. The second group had UFOs that were the size of an entire farming field. These were meant as heavy attack UFOs. They had 8 missiles, 18 canons, 30 bombs, and 2 tractor beams onboard and were piloted by 3 alien pilots. The third group’s UFOs were enormous. (The size of Central Park itself.) These UFOs were those that were used to gather vegetation. They had 5 tractor beams onboard and were piloted by 10 alien pilots. These vessels were huge but not near the size of the alien mothership. This New York City size vessel had a crew of 164,951,356 aliens, 5,000,000 cannons, 5,000 missiles, 500 bombs, 50 super bombs, 30 atomic missiles, 10 atomic bombs, 5 super cannons, and 1 giant tractor beam onboard, but could turn an entire state into a smoking crater with one blast of its atomic super cannon.
So anyways, back to Ben. He was driving through New York City with Bob in the front seat and Dan, Evan, and Katie in the back. All four children were crying. Eventually, Ben replied in sorrow, “I know what happened to your mother is terrible, but we must remain calm.”
Bob replied in tears, “how … do … you remain calm when … you know your … mother … was taken … away forever?”
Dan continued, “Yeah … how daddy?”

He walked into a small office where the alien commander spent most of his time. In the center of the room was a desk. Behind the desk was a backwards facing office chair. The alien commander was sitting in the chair. On the walls were samples of rock from all the planets the alien commander had invaded. On the back wall was a map of the galaxy that all the planets were in. The planets that the alien commander owned were circled. All the planets on the map were circled.
“Come on in,” the alien commander bellowed deeply. The alien slowly made his way into the alien commander’s office. “Have a seat,” the alien commander bellowed deeply once more.
“What do you want me for?” the alien said sounding terrified.
“You’ve been asking a lot lately about why I have decided to invade Earth.”
“Why is that?” the alien replied.
“As you know” the alien commander said pointing to the map on the wall behind the desk with his chair still turned, “I have invaded all planets in our origin galaxy.”

The alien commander started an evil laugh as Rose was pulled up in the tractor beam. At first he started softly, but then his evil laugh was strong enough for the entire city to hear. “Hahahaha …” the alien commander started to laugh, “hahahahahAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!” That terrible loud laugh ended Ben’s flashback.

“Mother!!!!!” all four children and Ben yelped. They rushed to the scene.
“I told you I would never let you down,” Rose said through the container.
Ben rushed to find something to break the tank. He found an axe lying in the field. He rushed back to Rose and struck the tank making it shatter into pieces. Ben and the four children all together hugged Rose.
A few seconds later a government truck pulled up. They were coming to search for alien life forms. The gang and the two government agents saw some movement to the mothership ruins to their right. The government agents searched through the ruins and found the alien commander. They grabbed hold of him and dragged him towards the truck.
The alien commander was conscious, so he was struggling to get free. As he struggled, he yelled to the gang “You have not seen the last of me. Once I get out of here, I will unleash my weapons again. Soon, I will have the entire universe bowing at my feet.”
The government agents threw him in the truck. They closed the doors and drove away.
Ken, Tyler and Julia rushed back to their house. Before they got there however, Ken approached the gang.
“Thank you for assisting us,” he said.
“No problem.” said the group.
Ken rushed to join Julia and Tyler, while the remaining group put their arms around each other and watched the remaining alien ships explode in the sky like fireworks.
