Students compete in spelling bee

Twenty-four students from Southern Middle School recently participated in the 11-round Scripps National Spelling Bee. Eighth-grader Emily Hellwig was named the winner after correctly spelling the word  mahogany. She won an online Encyclopedia Britannica subscription and a semester of Powerspeak 12, an online foreign language program.
