Greetings Kid’s Cookie Break fans! If you’re new to Junior Dispatch, you’re probably checking us out after our appearance on WTJL’s Saturday morning show.

Since we knew there might be a few kids coming to visit today, we decided to make this  coloring page just for you.

(Of course, we’re also glad to have our regular fans here as well.)

Here at Junior Dispatch we have all sorts of fun things to do, including our big selection of coloring pages.

Most weekdays, we post at least one new video, up to three new cartoons and usually a news story or two. When March rolls around, we cover the Iditarod dog sled race. That coverage also features a read-along story. Last year we did a series on an arctic fox’s’ life in the Alaska and the year before, we learned about the dog known as Prince Jan. We also are host a great biography on Abraham Lincoln and an online cartooning course.

As for our rocket-riding raccoon, what sort of adventures can he get into? That’s up to you as you color him and his spaceship.

Is he on his way to explore a haunted asteroid? Or maybe flying off for lunch at the launch pad? Maybe he’s zipping away to conduct a science experiment.

As you color him, try to come up with a story about his life, write it down and then e-mail it to us.

In summer 2012, the Junior Dispatch, the York Emporium and the York County Libraries ran a contest where readers got to write about the space adventures of aliens. To go along with the competition, we also created a mascot for the event — this little alien!

Well, now you can add your own touches to our design by coloring the alien however you want. It can have green skin and purple eyes. Is the alien’s space suit pink or orange? It’s up to you to decide!

A day with the Junior Dispatch

Kids had a ball at the Junior Dispatch table at the 2012 summer reading program kick-off event on Saturday. Do you want JD to visit your facility for a kids day? See below for details.

On Saturday, the Junior Dispatch staff participated in the 2012 kick-off event for the York Libraries and GO York summer program. We had a chance to chat on WJTL’s Kids Cookie Break program and visit with hundreds of kids.

We were there to promote Junior Dispatch’s short story contest and show off our site, but the kids really came for the coloring pages, and we collected a bunch of them to show here.

This is only the first of several batches of coloring pages, so keep coming back over the next few weeks to see yours. Feel free to submit more, and we will post them too.

Lelyn, age 5, colored our short-story contest mascot.

Angel, age 10, colored our satellite-retrieving space ship.

Se Quinna colored this bewitching image.

Mary Rose colored the Dover Area Community Library's coloring page. Wouldn't it be great if our moon had so many colors?

Jena, age 5, turned our horse rider into a lovely pink.

Leighton added some great colors to our fierce dragon.

You can download and color our exclusive coloring pages here (including the dragon, the witch, the horse rider and the spaceship).

Parents can then scan and e-mail the coloring pages and we will post them on Junior Dispatch. You can also drop off or mail your completed coloring pages or original poems, stories and reports to: Junior Dispatch, 205 N. George St., York, Pa. 17401.

Here are our coloring contest winners

The votes are in! After a two-step selection process, the Junior Dispatch staff (which is really the staff of The York Dispatch) is ready to name the winners for our coloring contest.

Jordyn's winning entry in the coloring contest.

As first described in the contest rules, we were actually awarding two first prizes. Why? Because we had two amazingly cute stuffed animals to give away!

It’s a good thing that we did too, because out of the 60-plus entries, we ended up having a two-way tie for the top vote-getters.

The winners both submitted their entries through the York Jewish Community Center, and they are … (drum roll please!) …

  • Lexi, age 8
  • Jordyn, age 11

Congratulations to our two winners! We will be dropping those cute and adorable huskies off at the York JCC  in a few days.

See all the entries in this slideshow.

More prizes: All the entrants to our coloring contest earned one of our mammoth-sized Junior Dispatch water bottles. If you entered the coloring contest through the library, a class or a daycare, we’ll soon be bringing you and your classmates water bottles. If you entered through the mail or e-mailed us an entry, you can come to the York Dispatch offices (205 North George St. in York, Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.)  and pick up a water bottle.

Lexi's winning entry in the coloring contest!

The details: The coloring contest was held in conjunction with our coverage of the 2012 Iditarod dog sled race and featured a scene inspired by our “Little White Fox” reading project.

The reading project features a kid-friendly story, videos, more coloring pages and other activities to promote reading.

You can learn more about the “Little White Fox” reading project here. Read our Iditarod coverage here.

How voting worked: After we collected all the 60-plus entries, we picked two staffers to each select their five favorites.

Then we posted the top ten entries and had all of our staffers vote for their three favorites.

The two coloring efforts by Jordyn and Lexi got the most votes and were declared the winners.

You can check out even more coloring pages here!

What’s next? We have a big contest planned for this summer. Keep an eye out for news on that coming soon!

Enter the Junior Dispatch coloring contest (DEADLINE: 3/23!)

You have a chance to win this stuffed animal when you submit your entry in the Junior Dispatch's coloring contest!

In conjunction with its Iditarod coverage and its “Little White Fox & His Arctic Friends” reading project, the Junior Dispatch is holding a coloring contest where you can win one of two soft and squishy stuffed animals — a pair of huskies. You’ll only win one of them for your coloring effort, but we assure they have more than enough cuddle.

THE RULES

Ages: This contest is open to kids ages 3 to 13.

Get the image: Here is a PDF of the image.  (Don’t try printing the JPG at right; the PDF will work much better!)

Color it: Color the image of the little fox meeting the seal, which is a scene from our current reading project. Although the fox in that story is called “Little White Fox,” you don’t have to color this fox white. You can color it with crayons, markers, colored pencils or anything else you like, including computerized coloring through programs such as PhotoShop.

Don’t forget: Include your name, age and a parent’s phone number so we can contact you.

Submit it: You can deliver it to the Junior Dispatch in a number of ways. Email a digital scan to juniordispatch@yorkdispatch.com. Mail your entry to:

Junior Dispatch
c/o The York Dispatch
205 N. George St.
York, PA 17401

You can drop off entries at the same location.

Deadline: Entries must be postmarked by Friday, March 23, 2012.

Prizes: Every submission earns a Junior Dispatch water bottle. The top two entries will win a stuffed animal husky dog

Notes: All decisions by the Junior Dispatch contest staff are final. Entries become the property of Junior Dispatch. Submission prizes (Junior Dispatch water bottles) must be picked up at the York Dispatch offices while supplies last, except bulk deliveries to classes or libraries. Submission prizes are only available while supplies last. Submissions will be judged on creativity and other factors. Only one entry per person.

The polar hunter

The “Little White Fox” story features animals encountering Omnok the Hunter more than once. While it’s not entirely clear, it sounds like he’s an Inuit who is hunting for fur and meat to keep his family warm and fed.

The coloring page at left is based on an old picture of an Inuit hunter from Canada. You can learn more about Canada’s native peoples here.
