CSY fifth-grader wins poetry contest

Nicole Terrell

Christian School of York’s fifth-grade class recently entered works in the Pennsylvania Poetry Society’s contest for the 2010-2011 school year. The students entered category 1, which was to write a poem on any subject, in any form, using 24 lines or less.

“Poetry is ordinary language raised to the nth degree.” — Paul Engle. CSY’s own Nicole Terrell is reaching for the nth degree in her poem, Nature’s Art, which took first place in the competition.

Nature’s Art

All the flowers cover the land,
The reflecting water covers the sand.
The moon shimmers over the trees,
The sun reflects off the seas.

Snowflakes dance across the sky.
The bright, shining sun sparkles up high.
The stars are shimmering so, so bright,
The sun is going out of sight.

Deer and rabbits cross the river,
The beavers in the water shiver.
Nature is a wonderful thing.
It makes me want to walk and sing!
