Read Across America night at Friendly’s

Read-Across-AmericaNortheastern High School’s National Honor Society will host a Read Across America night, 5-8 p.m. Feb. 27 at Friendly’s Restaurant, 423 Loucks Road.

While enjoying dinner with your family, books will be read by high school students. There will also be face painting and a meet and greet with Dr. Seuss.

A percentage of the money raised will go to the academic needs of the National Honor Society.

Northeastern to host 2 fund raisers for 4 Diamonds

Northeastern High School’s Student Senate is hosting a Mini-THON fund raiser, Cats for a Cure Children’s Carnival, noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 31, at the York Galleria Mall, by the JC Penny entrance, lower level. It will feature carnival games, face painting, and other activities, including an Easter egg hunt at 3 p.m.

The student senate is also sponsoring a Mini-THON, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at the school, 300 High Street, Manchester.

The event is to raise money for the Four Diamonds Fund, which provides monetary assistance to families dealing with pediatric cancer and supports pediatric cancer research.

Students must collect donations to participate. Elementary-age students can attend during family hour from 1 to 2 p.m. and middle school students are invited to attend from 2 to 4 p.m. There will be dancing, dodge ball, games, and other activities in the gymnasium, cafeteria, and natatorium. Participants should use the cafeteria entrance around the back of the high school.

Northeastern students sponsor 2 fund raisers

Members of Northeastern High School’s National Honor Society are sponsoring two fund-raiser events.

First, a spaghetti dinner will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, in the high school’s cafeteria, 300 High St., Manchester.

Dinner includes drink, salad, garlic bread, spaghetti, meatballs, desserts, and coffee. The cost is $8; children younger than 5 eat for free.

Non-perishable food will be collected at the door. Proceeds will benefit the Northeastern Food Pantry and Rock 4 Dakotah (benefits children with rare genetic disorders).

The second event is a Family Fun Night, 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, at Friendly’s, 423 Loucks Road.

Come celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday a few days early. High school students will provide story time for children as they wait for their meals. All are welcome to celebrate Read Across America Day. Ten percent of the bill will be donated to the honor society.

Northeastern students win in safe driving competition

Three Northeastern High School students worked together to win the 2011 Regional Safe Driving Competition. Pictured, from left, Tom Leary, Blake Stoner and Kyle Potter won the overall championship out of 18 schools from York and Adams counties. Stoner was the overall individual winner. He also placed second in the slide test and tied for first in the driving range. Stoner received a $2,575 scholarship for continuing education. He also placed 10th in the statewide championship in May.

Concert to feature NHS musicians

Student musicians at Northeastern High School will have the honor of playing with members of the Spring Garden Band in January.

The concert will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 9, in the school’s Sutton Auditorium, 300 High Street, Manchester. The Spring Garden Band will perform first, then approximately 30 members of the NHS Concert Band will join them during the second half of the performance.

Tickets are $5 each, available at the door or by calling band director Tim Howell at 266-3644, ext. 81037, or 364-8212. In the case of inclement weather, the concert will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 23.

All proceeds will benefit the new high school marching band uniform fund.

Program by veterans at NHS

Northeastern High School students received a moving message on Veterans Day about the importance of veterans, both past and present. Korean War veterans performed a dramatic presentation and U.S. Army Col. Thomas Faley, retired, shared tales of duty and service. The annual program is coordinated by social studies teacher Duane Swartz. Pictured, veterans perform a dramatic presentation about the bombardment of Fort McHenry.
