Northern third-graders create bio display

Third-graders at Northern Elementary recently created a likeness of individuals they felt have made a contribution to our world using bottles and other props.

During an exhibition, all grade levels and other visitors cycled through the display area to learn more about each biography from the third grade expert.

First-graders in Lori Gilbert’s class at Northern Elementary assembled gratitude gift packages for their adopted troop in the school café.

The school-wide program reaches 46 army soldiers each month with packages to coincide with the building’s themes of gratitude, joy and energy.

The soldiers, now serving in Kuwait, are responding with letters and American Flag badges which are displayed in the school lobby.

Northern students Race for Education

Pictured, Northern Elementary second-graders hit the track Oct. 5 during the annual Race For Education event. Students from all grade levels participated throughout the day with a second race held at South Mountain Elementary. Through sponsors, students at the two schools raised more than $40,000 to help fund PTO events and activities.

On Sept. 17, Clifford the Big Red Dog visited first-graders in Northern York County School District’s four elementary schools to promote GOAL (Grow your Own Area Library).

Sponsored by York County Libraries, the program encourages students to sign up for a library card.

Northern Elementary students got a taste of Belize

Northern Elementary students got a taste of Central American culture when Principal Joyce Cal, far right, a native of Belize, organized a celebration of her country’s Independence Day on Sept. 21. Cal treated students to 400 red, white and blue cupcakes organized in the form of Belize’s flag, played traditional music and shared a cultural video.

First-graders rewarded for clothing drive efforts

First-graders in Karen Repetto’s class at Northern Elementary collected the most hats, mittens, and scarves during a school-wide clothing drive in January. Many of the items were used to re-decorate the school’s Christmas tree and Repetto’s class received a hot cocoa party for their efforts. The drive was held as part of the school’s Character Counts program. The 300-plus items collected will be shared with a local charity.
