Northern students support hurricane victims

Members of Northern’s National Art Honor Society rallied the high school student body into donating a vast collection of items to help victims of Hurricane Sandy. In just four days, students amassed a roomful of urgently needed personal care items and non-perishable foods. The donation was included in a Carlisle Rotary truckload headed to Tom’s River, N.J., on Nov. 17. Chemistry students recognized

Four sophomores in Northern High School’s honors chemistry class received mini calculators and certificates for projects entered in the 2011 Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision Awards Program. The science competition encourages students to work in groups to simulate real research and developments teams. Northern’s Andrew Keirn wins essay contest

Andrew Keirn, a senior at Northern High School, placed first in Pennsylvania and third in the nation in the Investwrite Essay Contest.

The contest was sponsored by the Foundation for Investor Education, a program of the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association and was open to students in grades 9-12 who participated in the Stock Market Game.

The assigned essay topic was Financial Advisor for a Day. Students who entered the contest were asked to develop a portfolio for a couple in their late-20s with a short term goal of saving for their children’s college and a long term investment goal of retirement.

Andrew’s winning essay was entitled “The Best Financial Advisor for the Buck.” His prizes included a mini-laptop computer and a $300 savings bond. Northern High School received a trophy in his name and a pizza party for his class.

Northern team wins in math competition

Northern High School’s Polar Bear Team earned two first-place finishes in the annual Bucknell University John Gold Math Competition held March 16. Competing against 29 school districts, pictured from left, Stuart Ryerse, Zachary Felix and Mike Minnier won the team competition, with Felix scoring first in the individual category. This year’s exam was considered one of the toughest, with a median score of just two correct answers out of 36.

Successful audition for Northern musician

For the second consecutive year, Northern High School alto saxophonist Adam Buffington has successfully auditioned to participate in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association District 7 Jazz Festival. PMEA District 7 is comprised of eight counties and competition among musicians to perform is very high. Buffington is an accomplished jazz musician who will study jazz at West Chester University next year.

Northern students win Education in Bloom competition

Northern High School horticulture students won first place for Best Use of Plants and the People’s Choice Award for their Zen-type garden display, Bear Elements, at the Pa. Garden Expo in February. Competing for the first time in the Education in Bloom category, students hardscaped a circular patio with gray pavers, columns and retaining walls, built a pondless waterwall and planted over-wintered vegetables from the high school garden. Five-foot wind chimes centrally located around a fire pit completed the element requirements of water, earth, air, and fire. The students studied landscape art and design principles, scale drawing techniques, plant material and building options to prepare for the competition.

NHS students named honorary delegates

Three Northern High School students received Honorary Delegate awards at the annual Model United Nations Conference, Feb. 17-18 at Penn State Harrisburg. The conference simulates the U.N. General Assembly and other multilateral bodies, providing students with a forum to gain experience in diplomacy and negotiation. Seventeen high schools participated in this year’s event, representing 73 countries. Student delegates prepare draft resolutions, plot strategy, negotiate with supporting countries and resolve conflict in a virtually peaceful manner.
