Members of Amy Landis’ seventh-grade team at Northern Middle School competed in a pi digit reciting competition with Sam Brandt emerging the winner, reciting 48 digits of pi. Runner up was Michelle Arnold at 43 digits.

Alyssa Sheaffer, a student at Northern Middle School, is one of only 11 eighth-graders in Pennsylvania to earn a national medal in the National Scholastic Writing Competition for her poem “The Purest Knight.” She and Makenna McGill, both gold key winners in the regional competition, automatically advanced to the national level.

Since its March debut, a variety of healthy greens grown by Northern students are served at lunch at Northern Middle School. The mix of leafy greens made the grade at taste testing labs and will become a permanent part of the school menu. Four Northern Middle School musicians joined 200 other students from 31 schools for the 2012 Pa. Music Educators Association’s Youth Honors Band Fest at Camp Hill High School. The students performed to a crowd of nearly 800 on Saturday, Nov. 10, which was preceded by an eight-hour rehearsal on Nov. 9.
