Kid Scoop sets sail with pirates

Kid Scoop, our favorite newspaper supplement, uses today’s entry to look at women pirates. Yep, it may be hard to believe, but there were a few female pirates in history.

The two most famous female pirates were Mary Read and Anne Bonny, both of whom disguised themselves as men to set sail in the Caribbean. The two even worked on the same ship as one another.

You can learn about the duo in this student video: http://youtu.be/ddFMTuA1yi8

But this is Junior Dispatch, so you’re sure to want something more exciting than that. How about the trailer for “Cutthroat Island” a movie from the 1990s about a female pirate. http://youtu.be/zvzK7dz9qMI

Want to know how to make a pirate costume for girls? Check this out! http://youtu.be/hvopk72Bx3Y (This has a little bit of advertising, but you don’t have to pay attention to that.)

What is Kid Scoop? It’s a special page that appears every Monday in The York Dispatch and other local newspapers. Aside from its main feature and the Writing Corner, it includes games, puzzles and jokes.

Get your copy of Kid Scoop in today’s edition of The York Dispatch, and be sure to assemble your own Write On! entry and submit it to NIE@ync.com. We’ll run every entry here!

Of course, you can submit those entries, and anything else you want, for publication here on the Junior Dispatch. Send your JD items to juniordispatch@yorkdispatch.com. Learn about what you can submit here.

In Episode 64, Jason throws some boiling water on the mutineers. As a self-defense technique, this is actually a good tactic, but it’s also very dangerous because boiling water can severely burn a person. Remember: Kids should never handle pots on the stove without parental supervision.
(Parents and teachers can look through this PDF for a rundown of safety concerns in the kitchen.)

In Episode 58, one of the mutineers says he has the captain and others “hog-tied.” What does it mean to be hog tied? It typically means that someone’s feet and hands are bound. The term comes from cowboy lore, where they used a binding method to keep young calves under control. Now its mostly used in rodeo competitions, and you can see how it’s done by checking out this 1953 edition of Boys Life. You can see a video of a hogtie routine here.
