Report: Penn State gets ‘soft verbal’ from five-star recruit
Penn State has received a “soft verbal” commitment from a highly touted New York defensive tackle, according to Scout.com and Lions247.com.
Jarron Jones, a 6-foot, 7-inch, 290-pounder, is rated as a five-star recruit, on a five-star scale, by Scout.com. He’s also rated as the second-best defensive tackle recruit in the nation.
If Jones follows through on his commitment, he would be Penn State’s sixth verbal commitment for its 2012 football recruiting class. He would also be the highest-rated recruit the Nittany Lions have landed thus far.
Jones attends Aquinas Institute in Rochester, N.Y. He had offers from dozens of big-time programs, including Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Michigan and Notre Dame.
As a junior, Jones had 68 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery for a touchdown.
