York acquires starting pitcher Schumacher
The York Revolution acquired right-handed starting pitcher Nick Schumacher on Wednesday in a trade with the Sioux City Explorers, of the independent American Association. Sioux City will receive cash and a player to be named later in the deal. Schumacher had an outstanding year with Sioux City this season, going 10-5 in 21 starts and two relief appearances. His 3.03 ERA ranked third in the American Association and his 123 strikeouts ranked second.
Schumacher, 26, is a California native that had spent his previous three years as a San Diego Padres prospect. The Padres drafted him out of Wayne State College (Nebraska) in 2008, and Schumacher reached the Padres’ high-Class A Lake Elsinore team last year, where he went 1-1 with a 7.33 ERA in 23 relief appearances.
Prior to Lake Elsinore in 2010, Schumacher had started out the year with Class A Fort Wayne, where he prospered as a closer. In 40 relief appearances (39.2 innings) with Fort Wayne, Schumacher collected 21 saves, going 3-6 with a 3.63 ERA.
